While practically every establishment calls itself an institute, only a handful can be called institutions- the IIMs belong to this category. Post independence, the Government of independent India focused on the development of indigenous science and technology. As a technology base was being created, it became clear that the country needed to simultaneously augment management talent and resources. The response to this led to the creation of the Indian Institutes of Management in the country. The first IIMs: IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Calcutta, were set up in 1961 in collaboration with Indian industry, Government of India & respective states. In the subsequent years four more IIMs were set up in different parts of the country: IIM-Bangalore(1973), IIM-Lucknow(1984), IIM-Kozhikode(1996) and IIM-Indore(1998).
The world renowned faculty is one of the biggest strengths and propelling force behind the high quality learning experience at these institutes. The faculty members have not just distinguished achievements in different areas of management, but are also actively involved in research and carry out consultancy assignments for public& private corporations and international agencies. They strive to achieve excellence through partnerships with industry, and leading academic institutions, the world over.
Today the IIMs have gained such a reputation for excellence that they attract their own foreign students. Some of them have developed a formal student exchange programme collaborating with top B-schools from US, Europe and Asia .
